Are those comfortable?!
YES! That is the first and most common question that I get asked when people see my Vibram Fivefingers for the first time. There are many reasons why I wear these shoes all the time. One, they are incredibly comfortable, they help strengthen my feet, ankles, knees, and hips. But there's one reason you should try to go bare the next time you train.
Aside from the things people think about these "weird toe shoes", there are many great benefits to wearing barefoot or minimalist shoes while doing TRX Training. "Strong From the Ground Up" is a saying that I highly believe in. How can you build a sky scraper with a bed of marshmallows? Sure all that cushion might "feel nice", but what is your foot or ankle trying to tell you? You probably don't know because there is a HUGE pillow of cushion under your foot blocking that sound or feedback! I get that not everyone whats to go bare in their shoes because for the most part it takes time to transition from your normal training shoe to something with a lot less structure.
STABILITY is the major reason I encourage most people to go bare while working out. A lot of TRX exercises will challenge your balance, so if your trying hard to balance and stay engaged, having less underneath of your feet will allow you to spread your toes out and grip the ground and be better anchored to the ground. With barefoot style shoes you are able to then press your big toe into the ground better for single leg standing exercises which will activate a stability line of muscles to keep you better balanced. If you can steal more stability from the ground, the less you will feel wobbly and be able to work hard and get more from your exercises.
